Soos Creek Area Response

Keeping The Rural Area Rural

Greetings SCAR Friends and Supporters,

The SCAR Board would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and review some of our activities. We have maintained a relationship with the staff and ownership of Pacific Raceways, organizing meetings between them and local residents to address concerns and make suggestions as to various means to mitigate noise, traffic and other impacts to the Greater Soos Creek Community. Working closely with the Department of Permitting and Environmental Review (DPER) and other King County officials, we have endeavored to address the needs of our community as well as probable Conditional Use Permit and King County code violations. Our Board has coordinated with local Community Councils, among them the Green Valley/Lake Holm and Greater Maple Valley Unincorporated Area Councils to address community needs and concerns.

SCAR also apprises the community of quiet weekend days and notifies those beyond the DPER-designated area of the annual DPER Meeting, held each October.

We were successful in calling for PacRac to reduce noise levels by purchasing a more effective public address system, as well as a texting announcement system for drivers and crew members. SCAR has kept interested community members apprised of developments concerning the proposed expansion and new garages approved for the Pacific Raceways site, reviewing such matters as related permits, development schedule and proposed design. At SCAR’s urging, Pacific Raceways has made adjustments to their development plans and agreed to a number of measures to alleviate impacts to Soos Creek and the surrounding area concerning the expansion and garage construction. We will continue to monitor the expansion and related activities as they develop.

On occasion, SCAR retains the services of an environmental consultant as well as an attorney specializing in environmental law. We are an all-volunteer, 501(c)(4) non-profit organization; your donations are appreciated and can be delivered to one of our Board members or sent to our post office box listed below.

Perhaps most importantly, SCAR serves as a voice for the Greater Soos Creek Community, a matter of critical consequence given these times of encroaching development.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Your interest and support are greatly appreciated.

"Soos Creek Area Response (SCAR) will promote environmental education and awareness as well as protection and preservation of the environment surrounding Pacific Raceways and the co-existing area known generally as the Soos Creek Watershed. This area encompasses many small streams and surrounding wetland and environmentally-sensitive areas that are populated by a variety of animal life, including Chinook and Coho salmon. Particular emphasis will be placed on, although not limited to, the above-described general area within ten miles in all directions of the Green River as it crosses under Highway 18 and the nearby Soos Creek Salmon Hatchery. SCAR will hold periodic status and education/awareness meetings with the surrounding community. The organization will monitor, and, as necessary use advocacy and education at the federal, state and local government level to promote a balance between environmental and business concerns. SCAR will also promote maintaining the Soos Creek Watershed in a manner conducive to coexisting with the existing residential base. SCAR will solicit funds from the surrounding community as needed for situations that arise which may require funding to effectively fulfill its' mission. SCAR, like many advocacy organizations, has applied for and received grants offered by King County Local Services to support and promote local organizations like SCAR to help in providing information and supporting educational and advocacy efforts."
